Sunny Sunday in South Beach

Reg and I can happily report that any vegetarians looking for decent food in Fort Lauderdale should head for Sublime, a superb vegan restaurant (on US1 a mile north of Sunrise Blvd), although beware – they have a dress code which led to us being lent t-shirts to wear over our skimpy little tanktops last night! However, once inside the ambience is elegant and relaxed, service good, and food fantastic, and very reasonably priced.

After an excellent meal we left (feeling rather bloated) and headed down to the Coliseum. We arrived a little too early for any dancefloor action, so passed the time on a comfy sofa with several glasses of Long Island Iced Tea to get us in the mood. Once everyone in town realised we were already in the club it filled very rapidly indeed, and the dancefloor was soon packed. Good funky music kept us going well into the wee small hours.

Sunday morning was spent packing up and bidding a sad farewell to the Beach Villas, although I’ll be back there in three weeks and have been promised a water-front apartment which will be nice. We cruised down the coastal road gawping at the endless high-rise apartment blocks lining the ocean-front, arriving in South Beach, Miami, by 2pm.

After checking into the rather lovely Pelican Hotel on Ocean Drive (owned by Diesel) we had a pleasant lunch and people-watched for a while before hitting the beach, plonking ourselves down within a stone’s throw of the water. Mind you, we were too lazy to throw a stone into the sea, let alone ourselves. We’ve discovered that in this heat it’s very easy to lie down but not so easy to get up again. Oh, the hardships of life!

We’re now back in our room, called the “Executive Fifties Suite”. It’s beautifully done out in 50’s retro style, with lots of period features like big chunky chrome handles on the cupboards, red leather, chrome and marble dining table and chairs, and funky swirly patterns on everything. It’s got a fantastic view out onto the beach and ocean so maybe we’ll get to see the sun rise over the Atlantic tomorrow morning if we can be bothered to wake up that early…

Right, Reg is now out of the shower and reasonably presentable so it’s time to hit the town. The plan for tonight is shopping, food, bar, club, so I’d better get off this computer now.
